How Chi Omega Prepares Women for Life Beyond College

When people think about sorority life, I feel like they often picture the friendships or the events, like formals and sisterhood activities. While those are such a meaningful part of the experience, what I have found in Chi Omega is so much more than that. I have found a community that intentionally prepares women for life beyond college, both personally and professionally.
When I first came to UF, I truly had no idea what direction I wanted to go in. I chose the pre-med track because it felt like the “right” answer, but it did not take long for me to realize it was not where I belonged. I remember sitting in my classes feeling disconnected from what I was learning and starting to question what I was even working toward. When I finally decided to step away from that track, it felt like everything I thought I had planned suddenly disappeared.
What I expected to feel like a fresh start honestly felt overwhelming. Without that path, I had no idea what I wanted to do or where I fit. The number of options felt endless, but instead of being exciting, it made me feel stuck. I did not have connections, I did not know people in different career fields, and I did not even know where to begin.
That experience opened my eyes to how isolating it can feel to navigate college and career decisions without guidance. It was not until I found support within Chi Omega that things began to change. The women in this chapter showed me that I did not have to figure everything out on my own. They encouraged me to explore new opportunities, step outside of my comfort zone, and trust that it was okay not to have everything perfectly planned. Because of them, I was able to find direction and confidence in myself again.

That is what inspired me to apply to be the Director of Career and Personal Development. My goal was simple: I wanted to create a space where no sister would ever feel as lost as I once did. I wanted Career and Personal Development to be something women in our chapter genuinely look forward to, not just something they feel obligated to attend. More importantly, I wanted every sister to graduate feeling confident, prepared, and proud of the steps she took toward her future during her time in Chi Omega.
Throughout this past year, I have had the opportunity to turn that vision into reality. I have worked to create an environment where success is not something you have to figure out on your own, but something that is intentionally supported every step of the way. We have planned events like resume-building workshops, LinkedIn sessions, and alumni panels that connect our members with women who were once in their exact position. We have also provided resources like professional headshots, professional clothing swaps, and other tools that help make the transition into the professional world feel more accessible.
At the same time, I have strived to be someone my sisters can come to for resume help, interview preparation, or even just encouragement when they are feeling unsure about their next step. I want every member to feel like she has someone in her corner who is genuinely invested in her success.

Because of Chi Omega, I am now a confident pre-law student at UF. I work at the UF Levin College of Law in their Office of Career and Professional Development, where I help connect law students with job opportunities and professional guidance. I also serve on the executive board for the Gators Society for Pre-Law Women as the Secretary, where I help plan events that support women pursuing legal careers. This summer, I will be working as an intern at my dream law firm, an opportunity that once would have felt completely out of reach.
In other words, I am no longer lost, and I truly have the women in Chi Omega to thank for that. If it were not for this chapter pushing me to be the best version of myself, encouraging me to step outside of my comfort zone, and supporting me as I tried new things, I may have stayed in my pre-med bubble, too afraid to pursue something unfamiliar.
Sorority life prepares you for the real world in ways that go far beyond a resume. It teaches you how to lead, communicate, take initiative, and support others, all while being surrounded by women who genuinely want to see you succeed.
For me, Chi Omega has not only shaped my college experience, but has also given me the confidence, skills, and purpose to step into my future ready to grow and help others do the same.
xoxo,
Lilly Smith (MC 23)
