Six months ago, I sat in my study abroad apartment in Italy as raindrops beat against the window. I was putting bubbles for Bid Day in my Amazon cart when I got a text from Anna Kate Smith asking me to write a message to the future MC ‘23 from their New Member Educator.
Immediately I said yes, but as I thought about what I had to say to the future of Chi Omega, I was at a loss for words. How can I express the overwhelming eagerness I have to meet MC ‘23 in an Instagram caption? How can I show the future members of Eta Delta that I already care so deeply about each and every one of them?
I put a pen to paper–or my fingers to my phone keyboard–and typed a simple, yet sweet message just to let MC ‘23 know how excited I was to meet them.
Fast forward to now. It’s November. The week of Thanksgiving, in fact, and I can’t help but reflect on the many blessings the Lord has brought me since that rainy May day.
The greatest of those blessings is MC ‘23.
MC ‘23, you mean the world to me. I look at each and every one of you, and I’m filled with the greatest sense of joy seeing how each of you fully embodies what it means to be a Chi Omega. You are kind, loyal, selfless, scholarly and ambitious. You work earnestly, you speak kindly, you act sincerely and you choose thoughtfully. You constantly inspire me to be the best version of myself.
I poured every ounce of my heart and soul into your new member experience, and I would do it all over again in a heartbeat. Reflecting on all of the hours spent at new member meetings, retreat, big little, initiation and so much more, I would not change a single thing. I would spend every Sunday night in the dining room with you all for the rest of my life if I could.
From Olivia Metzler turning the 807 into a wonderland at GGG to Lilly Smith breaking it down to bring home the new member lip sync trophy, I truly do feel like a proud mom seeing each and every one of you succeed in all your endeavors. I’ll always be your biggest fan!
While there have been so many highs throughout the past three months, it’s not to say that there won’t be lows throughout college. You may not be new hooties anymore, but I’ll always be here for you all every step of the way.
In the blink of an eye you’ll be an upperclassmen looking back on the sweet memories Chi Omega has brought you over the past few years. Take in every moment. It feels like just yesterday I was sitting at the front right table in the dining room taking in everything my new member educator said. You all will be leading Eta Delta sooner than you think!
The past three months have been the most incredible three months of my life. Being trusted to welcome you into our sisterhood is something I will treasure long past my Chi Omega days. Serving as your new member educator has been the most rewarding and growing experience.
Now, I don’t have to think twice about what I would say to you in an Instagram caption. I could write an entire book on the joys the past three months have brought me, but I can dwindle it down to one word.
Signing off one final time as mama hoot!
Shailey Klein, MC' 21
